  • Beautiful onsen hotel right on Onsen Street, turn right and walk down past 7-Eleven, it's on the left hand side. You will recognise this free foot onsen outside, which has steam rising out of it in winter. The ryokan has a shop, public cafe and downstairs interior onsen open to the public for 1,000 yen pp. The cafe's unusual circular-framed windows overlook an appealing rock pond with large koi fish, well worthwhile popping in to take a look. Staff don't speak English but express warm Japanese hospitality.

What is YukiGuni?

Snow Country (雪国 YukiGuni) is a term derived from the title of the novel by author Yasunari Kawabata. Considered a classic work of Japanese literature, Kawabata was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for this work in 1968. (wikipedia)

Kawabata wrote the novel when staying at the inn, Takahan, located on the hill at the north end of Onsen Street, in Yuzawa. His room is preserved as a museum and is open to the public.
